Basketball fans enjoy during 3x3 World Tour Amsterdam Masters: 'This is a mega spectacle'

During the FIBA 3x3 World Tour Amsterdam Masters, visitors can not only admire the international stars of 3x3 basketball in real life. Even more fun: they can also see the Dutch Olympic champions at work up close. 'I want an autograph from Worthy de Jong.'
Brothers Liam (10) and Louis (9) have just gotten some fries when they hear that Worthy de Jong is about to play with Team Amsterdam. “Then we have to be quick!” Louis tells Liam, ”because I want to see if he makes as nice a two-pointer as he did at the Olympics.

In the Gashouder, the historic shot De Jong fired in the extension of the Olympic final is never far away. Whoever you speak to, everyone recalls that magic ball, which put 3x3 basketball on the map in the Netherlands for good. 'It was already late that night, but we were watching with our parents and all started cheering when Worthy made that two-pointer,' says Liam.

The brothers also play basketball themselves, at BVA in Amsterdam. Louis played earlier in the day. 'Won 61-10,' he says. Now he is especially curious to see how good the best players in the world are in real life. 'The best thing about 3x3 basketball is that it goes so fast and so much happens.'

A little further away, 43-year-old Don stands with three beers in his hand. He has caught the 3x3 bug because he is an acquaintance of Arvin Slagter and the rest of the Slagter family. “I also watch a lot of NBA, but 3x3 basketball is really a mega spectacle.

Don came to the Gashouder with two others who have nothing to do with basketball. But they love it,' he says. 'You can tell from everything that the sport is hugely upcoming, especially 3x3 basketball. That gold medal at the Olympics played a big role in that, of course. Those guys are suddenly rock stars.'
57-year-old Eveline also agrees. Although she adds that she would have come to watch even if the Dutch team had not become Olympic champions. 'Both my sons play basketball and I myself enjoy watching. Especially 3x3 basketball, it's dynamic and spectacular.'

That the World Tour Amsterdam Masters is held in the iconic Gashouder enhances the whole experience, she believes. The lights, the crowd sitting close to the court and the intimate atmosphere there make the experience even more intense. “It's really like the Gashouder was made to be a 3x3 venue,” she says.

When Liam and Louis finish their fries, they quickly walk to their seats in the stands. In the wings, their favorite player Worthy de Jong is already ready to come up the court. 'When Worthy de Jong finishes later, I want an autograph from him,' Louis concludes.
